Lawn mowers gather a lot of wear and tear over the years. If you’d like to keep your mower in good condition for as long as possible you can follow some of the easy upkeep tips we’ve compiled below. But, if your mower is on its last leg, feel free to stop by either of our locations in Ste. Genevieve or Leadington, Missouri to grab a brand new mower today!

Replacing Fluids

If you’ve noticed your mower has become more difficult to start over the years, you may need to check the fluids. If old fuel has sat in your mower’s tank for too long, you may have a build-up of fuel varnish which can make it difficult to start your machine. Try to use fresh fuel for every use and a fuel stabilizer to keep varnish at bay.

Much like a car, the more often you use your mower the more often you’ll need to change the oil. Be sure to check your oil dipstick every time you use your machine. When it begins to look black, thick, or murky, it may be time to change out the oil and filter.

Cleaning Your Mower

Don’t let grass, dirt, and other debris get into your mower’s more sensitive parts. After every use, give the underside of your machine a quick wipe down or gentle spray with the hose. This should keep rust from forming on your mower and reduce wear and tear. Just be sure to dry your machine in the sun or with a towel before placing it back in storage.

Sharpen Your Blade

One of the easiest ways to increase wear on your mower and shorten its lifespan is to use a dull blade. Depending on how often you use your mower, it’s important to remove the blade every few months or so to sharpen it. If you don’t feel like doing this yourself you can have a mower dealership do it for you. This generally takes very little time and is rather inexpensive depending on your mower type.

As you can see, keeping your mower in great condition requires very little upkeep. However, following the advice above will keep your machine running for years to come!
